How to Build Team Culture Virtually

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Here’s something to ponder that I’m a firm believer in: leaders should leave a wake of culture behind them for their teams to build upon.

In today’s work environment, virtual teams have become increasingly popular. With the rise of remote work (thanks to “the pandy”), it’s important to know how to build team culture in a virtual setting. Building a strong team culture can help increase productivity, motivation, and employee satisfaction. (At least in my humble opinion.)

Does your team have a mission statement or well-defined purpose? Sometimes, having something act as a “north star” can have a unifying effect, as well as drive focused productivity. This means setting clear goals and objectives that the entire team can work towards. A common purpose helps to align everyone’s efforts towards a shared vision, increasing a sense of belonging and motivation. To create a common purpose, start by defining the team’s mission and vision. Then, set clear goals and objectives that everyone can work towards. Make sure to communicate these goals and objectives clearly to everyone on the team.

This leads to communication, which is key to building team culture on a virtual team. When working remotely, it’s easy for team members to feel isolated and disconnected. To combat this, it’s important to establish regular communication channels and encourage open and honest communication. This can be achieved through regular team meetings, one-on-one check-ins, and daily updates. Make sure to use video conferencing tools whenever possible to help build a sense of connection and collaboration. I know “Zoom fatigue” is real, but attending meetings without a camera is like conducting an in-person meeting with the lights off. It makes it harder to connect with each other. (The exception to this is meetings not held during your normal work hours.)

Collaboration is an essential aspect of team culture. Encouraging collaboration can help to build trust, increase creativity, and improve decision-making. There are many ways to foster collaboration on a virtual team. For example, you can establish shared goals and objectives, provide opportunities for team members to work together on projects, and encourage knowledge sharing. Make sure to celebrate team successes and recognize individual contributions to help build a sense of community and collaboration. Virtual team happy hours or coffee chats are perfect ways to accomplish both connection and celebration.

On a virtual team, I think it’s important to provide support to team members. This can include providing access to resources, tools, and training to help team members develop their skills. It’s also important to provide emotional support by acknowledging team members’ hard work and achievements. Make sure to celebrate team successes and recognize individual contributions to help build a sense of community and collaboration.

Building team culture on a virtual team takes effort and commitment. By following these tips, you can help create a sense of shared purpose, community, collaboration, and belonging on your virtual team. Remember to communicate openly and honestly, foster collaboration, provide support, and celebrate success. By doing so, you can help build a strong team culture that will increase productivity, motivation, and employee satisfaction.

So, go ahead. Build the virtual team everyone wishes they were a part of!
