How to Draft Your Five-Year Plan (While Keeping Your Sanity)

Alright, folks, let’s talk about the dreaded five-year plan. It’s that thing that makes us feel like we must have our lives together and mapped out for the next half-decade. But fear not, my friends. I’ve got some tips to make this process a little less daunting.

First things first, grab a glass of wine (or beverage of your choice) and put on some comfy pants. This is going to be a journey, so you might as well be comfortable. You don’t want to be sitting there in your tight jeans and button-up shirt, feeling like you’re being suffocated. That’s not the preferred way to start a journey toward your future.

Now, start brainstorming some goals. It can be anything from “travel more” to “finally learn how to knit.” Don’t worry about making them too specific yet–just get them on paper. If you’re feeling ambitious, write them on a whiteboard or a giant piece of paper and stick them to your wall. That way, you can see your goals every day and get inspired to make them happen.

Next, take a break and watch some cat videos. You deserve it. I know this sounds counterproductive, but trust me, taking breaks is important. You don’t want to burn out before you even start. So, take a few minutes to watch some cute kittens playing or some funny cat fails. Laugh a little and then get back to work.

Alright, now it’s time to get specific. Take each goal and break it down into smaller, actionable steps. For example, if your goal is to travel more, you could break it down into steps like “research destinations” and “save money for flights.” This will make your goals seem less overwhelming and more achievable. Plus, you’ll be able to track your progress and feel good about yourself when you cross things off your list.

It’s important to remember that your five-year plan isn’t set in stone. Life happens, and things change, so don’t stress too much about making it perfect. If you need to make adjustments along the way, that’s okay. The important thing is that you’re taking steps toward your future and making progress.

Lastly, reward yourself for a job well done. Go out and indulge in some pizza or ice cream because you deserve it. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem, which will help you stay motivated and keep pushing towards your goals.

Having a five-year plan can help keep us on track and motivated. But don’t forget to enjoy the journey and not get too caught up in the destination. Life is meant to be lived, so make sure you’re having fun along the way.

High fives all around! (See what I did there?)
